TEECS Celebrates International Social-Emotional Learning Day in a Sustainable Way

On Friday, March 26, 2021, Thomas Edison EnergySmart Charter School joined communities across the globe to celebrate the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) on the second annual International SEL Day centered around Building Bonds, Reimagining Community. This event happened to coincide with TEECS’ monthly “Green Day”. “Green Day” is when the staff and students make an extra effort to care for the planet and remind the community of how to live sustainably.

The day consisted of various activities centered around mindful moments, good citizenship and community service.

The mindful moments were held to recognize the importance of self care. These included videos about social emotional learning, guided meditation and yoga.

Good citizenship activities involved students writing letters and creating posters for first responders in our community thanking them for their service. First responders included police and fire departments, paramedics, and hospital/healthcare workers to name a few. In addition, discussions were held about what makes a good citizen and  how our decisions impact the community.
Community service involved learning about and collecting donations for Safe Harbor Child Access Centers. Safe Harbor is a sanctuary for children, families, and individuals providing
  • safe spaces to host supervised visitations and social engagements for families experiencing separation and divorce.
  • support for individuals of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or other trauma-related experiences.
  • material support to families in need.

TEECS collected donations for Safe Harbor’s Garden of Hope.
